Marbella, the private way

Marbella is really four moods along one shoreline, and it helps to know which one you are booking into. The Golden Mile is the hushed stretch between the town and Puerto Banús: gated villas, old pines, hotel gardens and evenings that start late and end later. Puerto Banús itself is brighter and busier, all polished hulls and terrace chatter, at its best once the boats are lit and the crowds have thinned. The Old Town, the Casco Antiguo, is the opposite: whitewashed lanes, orange trees in the Plaza de los Naranjos and jasmine on the walls after dark. Nueva Andalucía sits just inland behind the marina, quieter, greener and easy to reach by car.

Timing matters more here than people expect. In summer the coast is at its fullest from late morning to early evening, so the most private hour is either first thing, when the beach is still empty and the sauna feels like a secret, or the slot just after sunset, when the heat breaks and the whole town drifts towards dinner. From October to April, Marbella softens: the light turns gold by late afternoon, the terraces are calm, and a warm session in the middle of a mild winter afternoon is one of the coast's quiet pleasures. Midweek is always gentler than the weekend.

Then build the evening around it. A slow walk along the Paseo Marítimo, from Playa de la Fontanilla towards the marina, is the natural warm-up; the sea air does half the work before you even reach the suite. Afterwards, drift into the Old Town for dinner: the lanes around the Plaza de los Naranjos fill with candlelight, and a table for two feels earned after ninety minutes of steam and stillness. If you would rather end outdoors, time your session to finish before sunset and walk down to the marina as the sky turns pink over the water and the boats light up. Everything is a short drive or an easy stroll apart.
