Your own spa suite in Mijas

Mijas is really three places wearing one name. Mijas Pueblo sits around 430 metres up the slopes of the Sierra de Mijas, a knot of whitewashed lanes, blue-framed flowerpots and an oval bullring, with the whole coastline laid out below it. La Cala de Mijas is the opposite mood: a former fishing village down at sea level, with the old watchtower on the beach, chiringuitos on the sand and the Senda Litoral boardwalk running off in both directions. Between and beyond them stretches Mijas Costa, the long ribbon of residential hills, golf courses and quiet coves that runs towards Calahonda. Our private suites follow that same split: a hammam-style suite up in the pueblo, and a sauna-and-hot-tub loft near the coast at La Cala.

A hammam belongs in a hill village. The old Moorish walls that once ringed Mijas are now gardens with a view, and the same logic of warm stone, dim light and slow steam that shaped Andalusian bathhouses still feels right here, where nothing moves faster than a donkey-taxi. Step out of the glare of a white square into a suite kept at a heat that softens the shoulders, let the steam do its work, then cool down with a glass of tea and the sound of nothing. Down at the coast the register changes: dry Finnish heat, a hot tub at garden level, a cold shower and the salt still on your skin from the morning swim. Either way the door closes and the suite is yours, with no shared changing rooms, no other booking overlapping yours and no one to keep quiet for.

The moment to book is the one most visitors miss. Watch the sun drop over Fuengirola from the wall gardens, stay until the streetlights come on along the coast far below, then walk a few minutes to a suite that has been warming for you: that is the pueblo at its best, and it fits inside a 90-minute booking rather than a whole day. In winter the logic runs the other way. A January afternoon in Mijas is bright but short, the light goes early and the air on the hill turns cool as soon as it does, so a suite at 16:00 followed by dinner in the village is a very good answer to a cold evening. Pair a coast suite with a long lunch at a chiringuito in La Cala and a stretch of the boardwalk; pair a pueblo suite with a slow coffee on the square and the little rock-cut chapel of the Virgen de la Peña.
