What is a private spa? A guide for two

The whole suite to yourselves, not a circuit you share with strangers. Here's what a private spa really is, what's inside one, and how a session runs.

Reading time · 3 minutes

A private spa is exactly what the name promises: an entire spa and sauna suite booked for you and no one else. There is no shared changing room, no circuit to queue for, no strangers drifting past your lounger. For the length of your session the door closes, and the space — heat, water and quiet — belongs to you alone.

That is the real difference between a private spa and the spa most people picture. A traditional thermal circuit or hotel wellness floor is shared: you move through a sequence of rooms alongside other guests, keeping your voice low and your towel close. A private suite gives you the same ingredients — sauna, warm water, somewhere soft to rest — but takes the crowd out of the equation.

What's inside a suite

Suites vary, but most bring together three things. A sauna — usually a Finnish dry sauna, sometimes a steam room — as the warm heart of the room. A pool of warm water: a jacuzzi or hydromassage tub built for two to sink into. And a relax area — loungers, low light, water to drink — where you cool down between rounds and let the heat do its slow work.

Some suites add a rain shower, lighting you can dim, or music you control yourselves. What they all share is that everything in the room is yours to use at your own pace, in any order you like.

How a session works

You book a private spa by the hour, not by the day. Ninety minutes is the standard session and, for most couples, the right amount — long enough to warm up, cool down and warm up again without watching the clock. At checkout you can usually extend to 120 or 150 minutes if you'd rather not rush. The whole suite is reserved for your window, so the price covers the room, not a per-person ticket — sessions on the Costa del Sol start at €105 for 90 minutes.

Who it's for

Two people, most often. A private spa suits an anniversary, a first proper date night, a quiet proposal, or simply an evening that isn't spent on a crowded terrace. Because the room is closed to everyone else, it works for anyone who finds shared spas more tense than restful: you can talk at normal volume, stay in the water as long as you like, and share the space with only the person you came with. If that's the appeal, our private spa for couples page goes deeper.

What to expect on arrival

Turn up a few minutes before your slot. The venue shows you to your suite, runs through anything you need to know — the sauna controls, where to shower first, how long you have — and then leaves you to it. Bring or rent a towel and swimwear; the changing space stays private to your booking. When your time is up you dress at your own pace and hand the room back. That's the whole choreography: arrive, close the door, unwind.

A gentle note on heat. Heat is a pleasure best taken gently. Step out whenever you feel like it, drink water, and don't push a session longer than feels good. Sauna heat isn't advised during pregnancy, and certain heart or blood-pressure conditions don't mix well with high temperatures — if that's you, ask your doctor first. Save any cava for afterwards; alcohol and heat make a poor pair. Every suite we list is checked in person against these basics — read how we verify each one.
